I’ve always loved this shot. It’s not just a photograph; it’s like a painting of light. Even the water is like brushstrokes. Normally you’re not allowed down onto this beach because of the Fairy Penguin colony there, but I was granted special permission (and had to be accompanied by a ranger). We arrived in darkness to position ourselves for sunrise; at first light the penguins began to prepare to go out fishing. We stood very still, and as we waited, one of the birds came down to the water’s edge to make sure everything was okay – then he waved to his little troupe of followers to join him. This mirrored down the whole beach as hundreds and hundreds of penguins began their daily routine. If you look carefully on the beach you can see the marks they left. Some of the penguins actually walked within inches of my tripod. After they had all departed, the moon began to sink towards the horizon and there was just this very silvery light that illuminated the scene before me. The moon was racing to the sea, the sun was rising behind me and the kaleidoscope of colours began to change. What a way to greet the day!
